Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season, and retailers have piggybacked on the three day weekend for decades, giving deep discounts on everything from mattresses to tires to appliances. But, for Gold Star families, there is nothing "Happy" about Memorial Day. In this podcast, I share with you the lives of Nick Daniels, Ryan Jopek, Don Sansone, Kurt Duncan and Nate Bruckenthal, who gave their last full measure for their country.
